QUESTIONS ABOUT WEDDING SPEECHES UK

Q.  How long does it take to prepare and deliver a speech?

A.   This is discussed when we speak, but obviously it takes some time to prepare a personalised speech, so the night before is definitely too late. The earlier in the proceedings the better because it does take time to write and amend if necessary, and also it will help put your mind at rest.

Q.  Can’t you just send me a standard speech from your stock?

A.  I could, but you would not be getting value for money. The whole point of my service is to prepare your speech, that on the day people will believe you wrote because it will include your own words and recollections.

Q. Does that mean I have to spend hours with you working out a speech?

A.  I have enough experience to be able to write a personalised speech for you based on one discussion and a completed questionnaire.

Q. Do I just read out the finished speech?

A.  You can, especially if this will help conquer your nerves. However, the more familiar you are with the speech, the more natural it will sound and the less you will need to read it. This is another reason not to leave it too late.

Q.  How long should I speak for?

A.   You will be surprised how much you can say in a short time. Do not think of a specific time, as you will be watching the clock. Be comfortable with the feel and content of your speech and remember, the most memorable of speeches are those when the audience wished you had spoken for longer, so do not speak for too long with nothing specific to say. The speech I prepare for you will be interesting, pick out themes and will avoid waffle. It will also ensure you don't overlook your responsibilities to thank certain people.

Q.  What if I don’t like the speech you prepare for me?

A. Firstly, it will be prepared using the information you give me, with additional material to make the speech fun and enjoyable. Secondly, the reason for sending you an initial draft is to overcome anything you are unhappy about.

Q.  I’m not very good at telling jokes and in any case, I never remember them. Do I have to make a humorous speech?

A.   No. However it is always appreciated if you can include some humour, and I will write some into your speech. Practice will help. You also have an audience that are prepared to join in with you, and will laugh easily.

Q.  Does it help if you write all the speeches?

A. Yes. It avoids the risk of you each repeating the same stories and sentiments. Even if I don’t write the other speakers speeches, it is a good idea to read through your speech with them.

Q.  How can I overcome my nerves at speaking in front of a lot of people?

A. You probably can’t overcome them entirely, but you can certainly help yourself by being prepared. Remember also that it is natural to feel nervous, I always do and so will most people at your wedding, so you will have lots of sympathy and support. I give advice on overcoming nerves and delivery in the package that accompanies your finished speech.

Q.  Can I prerecord my speech?

A. If only it were that simple. Sorry, but no. This is not “Top of the Pops” where you can mime.

Q.  When do I have to pay, and how?

A.  Sorry to introduce the subject of money, but I usually expect payment when I have prepared your initial draft and am ready to send it out. Payment is by cheque.

Q.  Can I be sure anything I tell you will be in confidence, and I will not be inundated with catalogues etc about weddings?

A.  You certainly can. I have no links with any other trader, I do not sell or give information to anyone else, and to reinforce that I have registered with the Registrar of Data Protection.
